Boxwood Inn
Newport News, VA 23603
The Boxwood Bed and Breakfast is located inside a beautiful 1897 southern mansion for Simon Reid Curtis and Nannie Cooke Curtis. The property was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Lucas in 1995, saving the building from potential demolition and leading to its full restoration. When Mrs. Lucas first began restoration work she broke a fingernail and exclaimed aloud that she needed an emery board. Though Lucas thought she was alone, when she turned around she saw a clean nail file sitting in the middle of a house full of dust. Amused, Lucas jokingly said “Thank you, now I’d like $100” and soon felt something stuck to her shoe. When she bent down to remove it she found that it was a golden tooth, which she sold to a local pawnshop for $100. The spirit responsible for these kind acts is believed to be none other than Nannie Curits, who is evidently fond of the way her home’s new occupants have treated the place as she is said to help keep the B&B in a constant good mood.
