Wayside Inn
Middletown, VA 22645
Founded in 1797, Wayside Inn is said to be the oldest still-operating inn in the United States. Wayside features plenty of rooms for lodging, a tavern, a restaurant, and according to legend, a few ghosts as well! The Inn served as a hospital for both sides during the Civil War, and now apparitions of injured men in both blue and grey uniforms are regularly seen. Room 14 seems to be particularly active, but there have been sightings throughout the building.

My husband and I spent the night in Room 14 and were surprised how spacious and beautiful it was. After my husband fell asleep I sat in the sitting room reading and heard very heavy footsteps walk into the room past me towards the bathroom. Without looking up and assuming the footsteps were my husband, I said “I didn’t realize you were awake honey” and when I didn’t hear a response, I looked up and didn’t see my husband. I got up and went into the adjoining bedroom and saw my husband sleeping and snoring. It was then I realized “someone other than my husband” walked past me in the sitting room. Later that evening I placed several of my paranormal lights up cat balls on the thick carpet on my side of the bed and as I lay in bed, I saw all of them lighting up and flashing due to something making strong enough vibrations to make them light up or someone I couldn’t see was touching them.
The hotel is beautiful, extremely peaceful and the food is wonderful. A very special place to spend the night.
I am planning on returning for another visit very soon.

We came to the Wayside Inn as a weekend gift from our daughter. We only new it was a historic place. We went to sleep not worried at all but my husband and I kept having nightmare after nightmare all night long. My husband woke up one time and heard conversations behind the wall eventhough we were the only guest on that floor that night.
The next morning we went for breakast we overheard other guests sharing weird happenings they all experied through the night. The waiter confirmed them by adding his own and other employees experiences through the years. I'm writing this on the first day of our stay. We're still to see what's going to happen on our second night...

When working as a night manager at Wayside Inn (around 1994), I frequently experienced 'gentle' interactions with assorted ghosts, i.e., turning lights on, locking guests out of their rooms. One of the more dramatic happenings is visualizing a decades old gentleman sleeping in his favorite room. Do not recall the room # however it is on the floor right above the registration desk facing the street. Quite often when I would leave early in the morning at the end of my shift I could see from the street that the light was on in that room. I know for absolute certain (unless a guest was checked into this room) that the light was not on when I did routine security checks during my 8 hour shift.

It was a surprise for my birthday, I can't explain the feeling you get when you walk into thw sitting room and bathroom. It's like something or someone is watching you. We had been drinking down in the bar section and when we returned to the room it was a sick feeling, like we weren't ourselves. We said an did things that's were not us. From crying and crawling on the floor in the sitting room. So much more but I would rather not bring those memories back. WE DIDNT EVEN GO INTO THE BATHROOM ALONE!!! We even blacked out ! We don't remember getting into bed but we do know the photos we have of the room and memories haunt us.So respect the room if you dare stay in it. Kaitlin & Randy

We had just checked in about 2pm on a Friday.
We decided to take a quick walk around before going to our room.
I was videoing as we walked in the older part of the inn.
The slaves kitchen . I spited a dark figure running behind the swinging doors.
There were no kitchen staff in the storage room Behind the doors. There was also walls on both sides making it impossible to have been a human.
