Dejarnette Building, Western State Hospital

The Original Western Lunatic Asylum is located at the intersection of Richmond Road and Greenville Avenue in Staunton Va. This vast property has some abandoned buildings, Buildings converted to Condos and The Blackfriar Theater. This is also the location of the Correctional Center it was used as for awhile.There is also the cemetery of unclaimed patients located on this property. Joseph DeJarnett did indeed work here, and a second magnificent building was built ( Abandoned for Many Years) barring his name but he was fired from Western State and they were not directly related with his " work" at the new building. But for your entertainment: There are underground tunnels connecting all the buildings at the original location mentioned above. Including the houses of the doctors etc that are also on this property. Folklore says they were used by deranged patients to escape! ( Truth is they were the means of heating. The heat being piped in from across the street, of which the building also still remains!) ( My father retired from Western State. He did confide in me that the original location I've been speaking of was very creepy at nights!)

Ok to set the record straight I have lived in Staunton my entire life so the next few statements are facts.The pics are one of the front one of the back.It became a center for juvenile delinquents later on but was indeed a insane asylum as original post stated and some very bad things went on in this building.In a local antique shop there is a old chair for sale that was bought at auction it has hand body leg ankle restraints.If it is super creepy!!And ues they tore it down

First picture shows the old Dejarnette center, which was for children and adolescents and has since been relocated (now Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents). The second picture is an abandoned building (torn down last year) that was unrelated. The story told in this description is about Weatern State Hispital (formerly Western Lunatic Asylum), which is also still operating but in a third location since its beginning. The original buildings that were then a jail are now condos. Old Dejarnette buildings are still there, abandoned and creepy.

I was there from June 2008 to oct 2008 and I know for a fact that place is haunted, dark figures in the hall way going in to the dr's office, something push on my back when I was sleeping one night and woke me noone around. gave me the creeps
